Ending the Term: A Time for Reflection
Now is a good time to check in with your students regarding their comfort level in your class. Surveying students allows you to see what areas need adjusting as well as those that are already meeting their needs.
I've heard some teachers say they would never ask their kids to give them feedback about their teaching because the kids wouldn't take it seriously. There are always a few students who will take the opportunity to criticize; these are often the ones who are dissatisfied with their grades or have a gripe with you because you've set boundaries for them. Many students, however, do give helpful feedback and want class to keep going well. They also appreciate that you're asking their opinions! If you choose to use one of the feedback forms below, here are some options:
1. Ask students to put their names on them. This way you can address issues privately, if needed.
2. Share an overview of the survey results and let students know WHY you will continue to give homework on Fridays, for example, or how you will incorporate more hands-on activities to meet their needs.
3. Thank students for their input and let them know you will follow-up in a few weeks to see if you are hitting the mark.
This reflective activity can also be a way for you to incorporate what you'd like students to work on - such as adhering to make-up work procedures.
I encourage you to change the surveys to meet your needs, and please share! You can use all examples below in all content areas.
